#6: The Lipstick Index (12/29/2023)
Itβs the last Friday of 2023, which means Iβm harnessing the delusion of Tokyo Toni and speaking about my goals like theyβre already here in the room with us.
So heres to the last Lipstick Index of 2023. Letβs dive into the good, the bad, and the bullsh*t happening in beauty.
Shop BDS-Safe - donβt let your next beat fund a genocide π
BDS stands for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement meant to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians. Out of solidarity with Palestine, beauty lovers are participating in the BDS movement and shifting to be more intentional about buying products that are BDS-safe.
To be a BDS-safe brand, it must meet four conditions:
Itβs not funded by a larger brand or parent company supporting Israel.
It has no stakeholders (board members, investors) that are a part of organizations that support Israel.
It doesnβt directly sell its products in Israel.
It has no factories or other functions in occupied Palestine.
This movement started in 2015, but gained traction in the beauty community after mogul, Huda Kattanβs, showed public solidarity for Palestine. She asked her fans for BDS-safe recommendations and declared her brands as pro-Palestine. TikTok user @nihel19 created a BDS-safe brands spreadsheet where you can see what brands are safe, what brands to avoid, and why. Considering that US tax dollars are being used to fund this war, Iβm not sure if we can 100% absolve ourselves, but it doesnβt hurt to try!
